Gymnastics needs advice that knows the rulebook
In Belgium, gymnastics is spread over several federations. Gymfed covers the Flemish clubs, the Fédération francophone de Gymnastique the French-speaking ones, and the Royal Belgian Gymnastics Federation provides the link with the international federation FIG and with European Gymnastics. Each federation has its own statutes, its own regulations and its own disciplinary bodies. The first question in a file is therefore which rules apply and which body decides.
What makes this sport legally particular is the age of the athletes. Gymnasts often reach the highest level before they turn eighteen. They train many hours a week, sometimes in an elite sports school with a boarding facility, in a close relationship with one coach. Questions about consent, parental authority, integrity and liability become very concrete. A suspension, a withdrawn licence or a ban on working with minors hits a career immediately. We draft the defence, plead before the disciplinary body of the federation and appeal when the decision does not hold up on the facts or on procedure.
Athletes under eighteen
For gymnasts under eighteen, the parents sign. We check training agreements, codes of conduct and image rights clauses against parental authority and against the rights of the child. We step in when a club or a federation does not respect those limits.
Elite sport agreements
We go through agreements with the federation, arrangements with the elite sports school and the rules of the boarding facility. We set out who carries which costs, who decides the training schedule and what happens after an injury or an early end to the programme.
Selection and qualification
Selection for a European or World Championship, or for Olympic qualification, rests on criteria set in advance. We check whether those criteria were applied correctly and challenge the decision within the deadline that the regulations impose.
Doping and whereabouts
A missed test or an adverse result starts a procedure with short deadlines. We run the defence before the competent tribunal, follow up an application for a therapeutic use exemption and guide you through the whereabouts reporting duties.

Who decides
The first decision comes from the disciplinary body of your federation. An appeal then goes to a higher body or to an arbitration institution such as the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport. An international dispute ends before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.
The deadlines
The time limit to appeal is set in the disciplinary regulations of your federation and is usually short. It starts to run from the notification of the decision, not from the moment you open the letter. Do not wait to ask for advice.
